Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH), a medical ethics non-government organization, is calling on the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to condemn the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for its practice of forced organ harvesting.
The call comes as doctors, lawyers, and politicians from the United States, Europe, and Asia hold the World Summit on Combating and Preventing Forced Organ Harvesting from Sept. 17-26 while the UNGA is gathered in New York this week.
DAFOH is calling upon the participants of the UN General Assembly to treat the CCP’s forced organ harvesting like any other crimes against humanity that have been recognized and banned by the global community, according to their statement provided to PRNewswire.
The summit also urges the international community to ensure an end to China’s forced organ harvesting.
These calls for high-level action are accompanied by widespread public support for the campaign against forced organ harvesting. For example, a petition campaign to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights that ended in 2018 garnered over 3 million signatures across the globe.
DAFOH said that it believes the United Nations have fallen short in taking the lead in stopping these crimes against humanity after more than two decades of forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience, primarily Falun Gong practitioners.
“The failure of the United Nations to address and thoroughly investigate the forced organ harvesting from living people in China is an unacceptable omission that needs to be resolved,” said DAFOH executive director Dr. Torsten Trey.
“Given the scope of China’s organ harvesting crimes with an unknown number of victims and the nature of the crime itself, a commercialized murder for transplants, condemning this inhumane practice remains an unfulfilled task for the largest organization in the world,” Trey added.
According to a 2016 report conducted by former Canadian Parliament member David Kilgour, lawyer David Matas and researcher Ethan Gutmann, about 30,000-100,000 people are being killed for their organs in China per year.
Falun Gong, a faith group, has experienced 22 years of oppression from the CCP. Millions of its practitioners face detention, harassment, and torture for simply upholding their belief in Truth, Compassion, and Tolerance.
