Federico Gonzalez, a top adviser to the President of Paraguay, confirmed with Reuters on Dec. 10 that his country would continue diplomatic relations with Taiwan despite China.
The affirmation came as Central American country Nicaragua opted for China’s ties over Taiwan. Both Nicaragua and the South American nation Paraguay have been among the small international allies of Taiwan to defy Beijing’s aggressive reunification demand over the island.
Gonzalez said, “It is a decision of the Nicaraguan government. We respect it, but Paraguay remains firm in its position to continue diplomatic relations with Taiwan”.
“For Paraguay this doesn’t change anything. Our position remains the same”.
Paraguay is the only South American country that has maintained a close relationship with Taiwan. The relationship between Paraguay and Taiwan has spanned more than six decades.
Taiwan has funded infrastructure projects and agricultural support for Paraguay. Recently, Taiwan had also donated medical supplies when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in the South American country.
In June of last year, when announcing the donation of one million vaccine doses to Paraguay, the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, said that the relationship between Paraguay and Taiwan could be viewed as a good example to the world.
