A female police officer reportedly dived into a river in an attempt to save a drowning baby thrown from a bridge by his dad.

It was Wednesday afternoon and Jessica Voiels, 24, was on patrol when an emergency call was made about a body in a river. The officer rushed to the scene and saw baby Zakari Bennett-Eko, 11 months old, thrown into the River Irwell in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, England, in a Moses basket.

Voiels jumped into the river to pull the baby out of the water. He was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

The boy’s dad, Zak Eko, 22, appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Sept. 13 in a hearing lasting less than one minute. He was charged with murder and was remanded in custody to appear at Manchester Crown Court on September 16, The Sun reported

People have been texting Voiels saying they were so proud of her and she has handled the incident very well.

PC Voiels, 24, wrote: “Had my worst shift yesterday. I can’t see many things being as bad as that in the future”.
