Kosovo awarded one of its highest honors to President Donald Trump by distinguishing him for his role in the historic economic normalization agreement with Serbia reached earlier this month, Fox News reported.

President Trump received the country’s Order of Freedom from Kosovo President Hashim Thaci “for his exceptional contribution for the freedom of Kosovo and the strengthening of peace and reconciliation in the region.”

The award is given to those who made significant contributions to the defense of Kosovo’s freedom.

In early September, President Trump oversaw the signing of the agreement between Serbia and Kosovo, which normalizes economic relations between the two countries. At the ceremony, Kosovo also pledged to recognize Israel, and Serbia agreed to move its embassy to Jerusalem.

The agreement was signed by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Avdullah Hoti, in front of President Trump in the Oval Office.

After the signing of the historic agreement, whose images traveled the world, President Trump received another nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Magnus Jacobsson, a member of the Swedish Parliament, said he was nominating President Trump along with Serbia and Kosovo “for their joint work for peace and economic development, through the cooperation agreement signed in the White House.”

It is worth mentioning that the announcement came on the same day that President Trump announced that Bahrain had joined the United Arab Emirates and Israel in a peace agreement that earned the president his second Nobel Prize nomination.

Kosovo had declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, nine years after NATO carried out a campaign of air strikes against Serbia in an attempt to end the brutal persecution of ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.

While most Western nations have recognized Kosovo’s independence, Serbia, Russia, and China have not, keeping tensions high in the Balkan region.

“I am happy that Kosovos President has decided to award President @realDonaldTrump and his administration with Kosovos highest national award for the Kosovo and Serbia economic normalization agreement. I hope the Nobel Peace Prize Committee does the same with my nomination!” said parliamentarian Jacobsson on his Twitter account.
