According to the annual report of the nongovernmental organization Freedom House, the “malign influence of the regime in China” has contributed to a significant deterioration of democracy in 2020.

According to the 2021 edition released on Wednesday, March 3, the report called Freedom in the World, the pandemic destabilized the world, resulting in dire consequences that multiplied the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) malevolence.

The growing malevolence of the CCP

The report detailed that the number of countries designated as ‘not free’ reached its highest since the deterioration of democracy began in 2006, indicating that countries with declining political rights and civil liberties outnumbered those with gains.

It particularly notes that the CCP intensified its disinformation and censorship campaign to counteract the fallout from its cover-up of the initial outbreak of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) Virus, or coronavirus, preventing a faster global response to the onset of the pandemic.

“Its efforts also featured increased meddling in the domestic political discourse of foreign democracies, transnational extensions of rights abuses common in mainland China, and the demolition of Hong Kong’s liberties and legal autonomy,” the publication added.

The CCP infiltrates other countries

It questions the fact that the CCP has gained influence in multilateral institutions such as the U.N. Human Rights Council, from which the U.S. withdrew in 2018 in the face of CCP’s moves to push policies that sanction foreign countries’ interference in domestic issues.

Such policies fail to condemn abuses of democratic principles and ignore human rights violations, while at the same time promoting autocratic alliances.

The report also questions some measures imposed as the CCP Virus spread to other countries such as excessive surveillance, arbitrary restrictions on individual freedom such as travel and assembly, and the enforcement of such restrictions by the authorities.

Global erosion of democracy

Freedom House also indicated that the global erosion of democracy had “tangible effects on human life and security, including the frequent resort to military force to resolve political disputes,” in relation to conflicts in Libya, Yemen, Ethiopia, and the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

For each particular case, the NGO said that an authoritarian and powerful government that does not fear rejection by the nations of the world regularly was in the middle of escalating conflicts.

Recently, Chinese state media criticized the West for condemning the CCP’s crackdown on Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters, saying they were criminals just like the U.S. Capitol rioters on Jan. 6.

The report rejected the CCP’s repressive actions against Hong Kongers as well as its arguments to naturalize gross human rights violations.

“In this climate of impunity, the CCP has run roughshod over Hong Kong’s democratic institutions and international legal agreements. The territory has suffered a massive decline in freedom since 2013, with an especially steep drop since mass pro-democracy demonstrations were suppressed in 2019 and Beijing tightened its grip in 2020,” the publication stated.

How the CCP erases civil liberties

“The central government’s imposition of the National Security Law in June erased almost overnight many of Hong Kong’s remaining liberties, bringing it into closer alignment with the system on the mainland,” it added.

As Freedom House pointed out, the CCP stepped up the use of the questionable national security law in early 2021 to arrest more than 50 politicians and pro-democracy activists after participating in primary elections in the spirit of winning legislative elections that ended up being postponed for a year.

As Breitbart News pointed out, a dangerous threat to democracy around the world lies in political elites in free nations beginning to act like the Chinese Communist Party that holds that democracies are illegitimate because they have no authoritarian power base to back them up.
