Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), made strong statements accusing the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) of having managed to penetrate the public education system in the United States, from where it would implement indoctrination plans to establish Marxist, globalist, and atheist ideals in American children.
Blackburn, along with other Republicans, is targeting an educational program proposed by the CCP that is taught in many elementary and secondary schools in the United States, known as “Confucius classrooms,” according to Fox News.
Several of the Confucius Institutes have been closed and expelled from U.S. college campuses, accused of disseminating pro-Chinese content in their curriculum. Now, U.S. education experts are concerned that a generation younger than college age is also being targeted through the Confucius classroom methodology denounced by Blackburn.
The curricula taught there are backed by the Confucius Institute in Beijing, a global educational program that had gained a foothold in many U.S. universities until heavy criticism led to the closure of many of them.
“It is deeply alarming to see the propaganda being taught to American students, but it is even more alarming to see the way in which school institutions, teachers, principals, and administrators, are being molded and designed to accept the Chinese government’s [CCP’s] ideas, and even promote them in the name of globalism and cross-cultural communication,” said Rachelle Peterson, senior research fellow at the National Association of Scholars, as reported by Fox News.
Peterson, like Blackburn, warns that CCP’s real goal is to spread Party policies in the U.S. education system.
The Confucius Institutes use the dissemination of Mandarin and Chinese culture as an argument for its penetration into U.S. public education, the reality is that behind the scenes it seeks to impose a propaganda system, censoring the truth and imposing a distorted account of reality and social conflicts.
Peterson asserted, “American students do need to learn Chinese. They need exposure to Chinese culture, but not on the Chinese government’s terms. Confucius classrooms are an inappropriate tool and it’s time to let them go.”
The State Department recently estimated that there were about 500 Confucius Institutes operating in the United States.
The Trump administration fought emphatically for four years against the penetration of Chinese communism into American society, taking a number of concrete steps to prevent its advance.
In August 2020, the State Department designated the Confucius Institutes of the United States (CIUS) as a Chinese foreign mission amid tensions between the two countries.
In a statement, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that CIUS is“an entity advancing Beijing’s global propaganda and malign influence campaign on U.S. campuses and K-12 classrooms,” emphasizing that the United States wants to ensure students can learn the Chinese language and its traditional cultural offerings, but free from the influence of the CCP.
The State Department said that the measure is intended to ensure that U.S. teachers and administrators can make decisions about whether the programs should be allowed to continue.
Blackburn, taking into account the new reality with the arrival of the Democratic administration of Joe Biden, expressed her concern and warned that it will be difficult to continue to resist the advance of the CCP if we have an administration that will be friendlier to it.
