Australia’s NewsWire reported on December 3rd that Eric Abetz, a Liberal senator, launched a “diplomatic boycott” to boycott the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. He has been supported by the opposition Labor Party.

Senator Penny Wong from the Labor Party said she would work with the Australian government to reach a consensus on a “diplomatic boycott” issue.

If the Australian government approves, officials will not attend the Beijing Winter Olympics. Australian athletes are still participating in events as usual.

Australian officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Australian that regardless of whether Australia participates in a “diplomatic boycott,” Australian Sports Minister Richard Colbeck and Foreign Minister Marise Payne are already unlikely to attend.

In addition, Women’s Tennis Association Director Steve Simon suspended all tournaments in China and Hong Kong on December 1st, aboluowang reported.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Nov. 30 that Australia was considering a “diplomatic boycott” of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
