President Donald Trump on Tuesday responded to comments from the Iranian president by threatening Tehran with “great and overwhelming force” if it attacks “anything American.”

In a series of tweets, President Trump fired back after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called the White House “mental delay” following new sanctions against the Supreme Leader.

“Iran leadership doesn’t understand the words ‘nice’ or ‘compassion,’ they never have,” Trump tweeted. “Sadly, the thing they do understand is Strength and Power, and the USA is by far the most powerful Military Force in the world, with 1.5 Trillion Dollars invested over the last two years alone.”

“Iran’s very ignorant and insulting statement, put out today, only shows that they do not understand reality,” Trump added. “Any attack by Iran on anything American will be met with great and overwhelming force. In some areas, overwhelming will mean obliteration. No more John Kerry & Obama!”

Trump signed an executive order on Monday enacting new sanctions against Iran’s supreme leader and other high-ranking officials in an effort to further cripple the country’s economy.

Rouhani said the sanctions were “idiotic” and closed the doors on the chances of a diplomatic solution.

President Trump on Monday asserted that he does not need congressional approval to order a strike on Iran.

“I do believe that … but we’ve been keeping Congress abreast of what we’re doing, and I think it’s something they appreciate. We had a lot of folks over the other day. … Told them what was happening, what was going on,” Trump told The Hill.

After pulling back from military action last week, President Trump on Monday signed an executive order to authorize increased economic sanctions against Iran, which have devastated the Iranian economy.
