A 4-day-old baby girl, who was found buried alive in a cemetery in northern India, was hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

The baby was pulled to safety by a couple in Uttar Pradesh, India, on Oct. 10, as they were burying their own stillborn baby girl at a grave, CNN reported.

“When they began digging the ground, they immediately heard noises of crying. As they dug up two to three feet of dirt, they found a baby girl who had been buried in an earthen pot,” Abhinandan Singh, Superintendent of Police for Bareilly district, said.

A cemetery security guard notified the police and took the baby to a nearby hospital, where she is receiving treatment in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

“The baby had some infections and weighed only 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds),” Alka Sgarna, a medical superintendent who oversaw her treatment, said.

The baby currently has various respiratory issues and requires a ventilator, Sgarna said.

The area where the baby was buried was “quite isolated,” and believed she had been in the ground for about four to six hours before being rescued, police said.

Police are looking for her parents, who could be charged with attempted murder and abandoning a child, Singh added.
