These figures are based on data filed to EudraVigilance and are estimations. According on the percentage of adverse reactions reported, the totals could be significantly higher.

From the total of injuries recorded, half of them (837,588) are serious injuries. According to Health Impact News, it can be labeled as “serious” if it relates to a medical incidence that causes death, is life-threatening, necessitates inpatient hospitalization, causes another medically essential condition or prolongation of an existing hospitalization, causes persistent or remarkable handicap or lack of capacity, or is a congenital anomaly/birth defect.

EudraVigilance is the system for managing and analyzing information on suspected adverse reactions to medicines that have been authorized or being studied in clinical trials in the European Economic Area (EEA). The European Medicines Agency (EMA) operates the system on behalf of the European Union (EU) medicines regulatory network.
