Peru increases border control
Peru announced that it is increasing border control to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants from Venezuela.
Peruvian Foreign Minister Néstor Popolizio reported that all authorities are joining forces to reduce illegal entry into the country.
He explained that they have begun to coordinate directly from the ministries, including the security and immigration departments..
He assured that the new measures are necessary despite the fact that there has been a notable decrease in immigration since the country began to demand visas from Venezuelans in June, as Ecuador did.
According to some sources, the number of displaced people fleeing Venezuela's economic and humanitarian crisis could reach more than 4 million.
Former first lady of Guatemala arrested
Guatemalan former first lady and two-time presidential candidate Sandra Torres has been arrested.
Officials said the arrest took place Monday at her residence on charges of electoral financing and conspiracy.
She was then transferred to the Guatemalan courthouse in the capital, where she entered without making any statements.
It was reported that the former first lady did not account for more than 3.5 million dollars she collected during the presidential campaign she lost in 2015 to Jimmy Morales, the current president.
Guatemalan President-elect Alejandro Giammattei promised during the last electoral campaign that he would put the former first lady in jail.
