Last month, Tropical Storm Imelda hit Texas leaving at least two people dead and more than 1,000 rescued as floods devastated parts of Texas, according to The guardian. During the flood, a 21-year-old man made headlines for single-handedly running a hotel and caring for its guests trapped along with him.
Homewood Suites employee Satchel Smith said he was just “doing his job” when he took care of 90 guests in the hotel, which included answering phones, cooking, doing dishes, and washing laundry, during a solo shift that lasted over 32 hours.
The city of Beaumont, Texas, honored Smith with a proclamation for his heroics and surprised him with a new car, a 2013 Honda Hybrid during an event after the young man said he lost his car in the flooding.
“I mean it was a bit unexpected—overwhelming!” Smith told KFDM News. “I mean I don’t expect anything for what I did. I’m truly thankful.”
