The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) is investigating the death of a young child after being left in a car in a Knoxville grocery store parking lot on Friday, Aug. 9.

Officials said they received a call about a deceased child in the 5000 block of Clinton Highway in the Food City shopping center just after 3 p.m.

Upon arrival, officials found the child dead.

A witness told WVLT News that she was on the phone in the Food City parking lot when she noticed a woman pacing back and forth and crying outside a vehicle.

When she approached the car, she saw a small child, no older than 6, laying in the backseat, the witness said.

She saw the woman with another child walking out of the grocery store together, the witness said.

KPD said they are looking to get the full details about the incident.

“We have to get more details … before we feel comfortable releasing anything else,” KPD representative Scott Erland said.
