In Romulus, Michigan, a felony warrant was issued for the arrest of a man wanted by Oakland County for animal cruelty and neglect/abandonment for leaving more than 500 animals in a Romulus store.

A concerned neighbor tipped off police in August that somebody keeping over 500 animals inside a strip mall in Romulus, including a kangaroo and 300 hedgehogs. A search warrant was executed by animal control officers and other authorities.

Police said they even had a report that a baboon was being kept, but during the search, they didn’t find one.

Police said they knew who the “bootleg zookeeper” is in August, and they’re looking to talk to him. In the meantime, all the animals were turned over to those who could take care of them properly.

Romulus police have now identified the man as Javon Stacks, 36, from Oakland County.

Police are asking anyone who knows where Stacks might be calling 734-941-8400 or encouraging him to turn in.
