Voting by mail takes on vital importance in this year’s elections, since the irregularities that characterize the process carry a great deal of uncertainty about the accuracy of the results warned author and political analyst James Pinkerton.
The current system allows each state to dictate its own rules.
Recently, with Democratic governors, Minnesota and Pennsylvania changed their rules to allow votes postmarked by Election Day to be counted as valid, even if they arrive later. Likewise, the states of California and New Jersey, also with Democratic governors, recently decided to mail ballots to each voter automatically.
In addition to the fact that there are various regulations, these can be changed without notice, which is disturbing.
“Revising the way Americans vote in less than 80 days will only lead to chaos and confusion,” said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Mandi Merritt, according to The Washington Post.
Changes can also have a judicial origin, as happened in Indiana on Aug. 21, when it was learned that a federal judge ruled that election officials cannot reject ballots when signatures do not match. In those cases, the voter must be warned and allowed to rectify his or her ballot for it to be recognized as valid.
Similarly, a federal judge in Texas ruled on Aug. 28 that the state was violating federal law by not allowing citizens of its state to register to vote when renewing their driver’s license over the internet. The judge now allows citizens to do both simultaneously, over the internet: they can renew their license and register to vote.
For Pinkerton, the speeches and other resources used in previous campaigns are displaced by technological opportunity. “What really matters is using the latest technology to speed up the process of identifying your voters and getting them to the polls. And then, of course, making sure that their votes are counted correctly,” said Pinkerton, in his Breitbart article.
It appears that Democrats are the most interested in absentee ballots and in counting those votes, but this is contradictory when one recalls the failure to count votes in Iowa in February.
“It was just on February 3 of this year that the Democrats held their presidential meeting in Iowa. And immediately, the vote count was a calamity in the results and gave meaningless totals,” Pinkerton recalls.
Similar errors occurred on other Democratic ballots throughout this year.
To make the situation even more chaotic, local registrars in several states set up new drop off boxes to independently collect the U.S. Postal Service ballots. “Lake County, Illinois, will have more than a dozen, DuPage County plans to have more than 300 drop off boxes at early voting sites and Election Day sites,” WGN9 quoted on Aug. 19.
Pinkerton predicts that this Election Day could be longer than expected in the face of all these challenges. “With such precedents in mind, it’s quite possible that the presidential election of 2020 could become the presidential struggle of 2020 and 2021,” Pinkerton warns.
President Donald Trump has criticized the mail-in ballots given all the risks of fraud that it presents.
In one of his tweets, he mentions the drop off boxes currently being installed. “So now the Democrats are using Mail Drop Boxes, which are a voter security disaster. Among other things, they make it possible for a person to vote multiple times. Also, who controls them, are they placed in Republican or Democrat areas? They are not Covid sanitized. A big fraud!” tweeted Trump.
