University of Nevada, Las Vegas student, 19-year-old Paula Davis, was sexually assaulted as she died from a pair of gunshot wounds to the back of her head, according to police.
Her former boyfriend, Giovanni Ruiz, has been accused of killing Davis. The 21-year-old is facing a murder with a deadly weapon charge, KVVU-TV reported.
Police said it was unknown who assaulted Davis.
Ruiz was arrested after Davis’s body was found naked inside the back of her family’s van at a North Las Vegas park.
According to transcripts obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a medical examiner testified before a grand jury that she noticed signs of sexual assault that appeared to indicate that Davis was raped as she was dying.
North Las Vegas police executed a search warrant at Ruiz’s home and found a bullet in his bedroom on Sept. 10. Police found a semi-automatic handgun hidden inside a suitcase in the garage, according to the arrest report.
There was also a receipt found with the gun that showed the weapon had been purchased two days before Davis was killed.
The couple had dated, but Davis tried to break up with Ruiz in the days before her dad found her dead on Sept. 6, according to grand jury testimony. Her family said Ruiz was overly possessive and jealous.
