A U.S. citizen was killed during a failed carjacking attempt while waiting on a bridge at an international port of entry in Reynosa, Tamaulipas into Hidalgo, Texas.

The fatal incident occurred on Monday evening, Dec. 23, on the part of the road that curves into the entrance to the bridge—Oscar Manuel Resendez, 41, was sitting in a small SUV waiting to cross into Texas when a gunman tried to rob him.

Resendez got out of his vehicle and tried to fight with the robber. Other motorists tried to help but the victim was shot and died next to his vehicle. Breitbart reported that he was shot at least once.

The gunman ran away before authorities could arrive. The Tamaulipas Attorney General’s Office responded to the scene for documentation and began the process of notifying the victim’s family. Since Resendez was a dual citizen, it remains unclear if the U.S. Consulate will take an active role in the case.

The incident comes at a time when Reynosa is seeing a spike in carjackings, kidnappings, and robberies as the holiday season approaches.
