On Monday, Dec. 28, President Trump recalled the legacy of St. Thomas Becket, an English archbishop who gave his life in confronting the tyranny of the king when he wanted to subject the church to the power of the state.
President Trump said in his proclamation to Americans, “rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God” and “defending liberty is more important than life itself,” an expression that alludes to the importance of putting God’s teachings above the opinion of men.
The United States under the Trump administration has played a major role in seeking to end campaigns by dictatorial governments that persecute their own people for their beliefs, as in the prominent case of China, where the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has persecuted more than half of the Chinese for various reasons since its inception.
Beginning with the outbreak of the CCP Virus that caused enormous losses globally, President Trump pointed directly to the CCP as responsible and thereafter led an effort to expose its crimes.
Through economic sanctions on companies involved in forced labor, visa restrictions, and asset freezes on government officials who violated human rights, the relentless work of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who sounded his condemnation of CCP crimes around the world, the CCP’s arrogance, and perversity have seen their worst days.
“On this day, we celebrate and revere Thomas Becket’s courageous stand for religious liberty and we reaffirm our call to end religious persecution worldwide,” President Trump wrote.
The president noted, “Crimes against people of faith must stop, prisoners of conscience must be released, laws restricting freedom of religion and belief must be repealed, and the vulnerable, the defenseless, and the oppressed must be protected.”
President Trump was recently elected as the Pro-Life Person of 2020 by Operation Rescue, a pro-life organization. Trump was also the first president to attend the March for Life in Washington in 2020 where he gave an impassioned speech on the sacredness of life.
But President Trump’s vision of religious freedom and life is not a political tool of his to attract votes. In obedience to God, he sees the future of America and the world.
“A society without religion cannot prosper. A nation without faith cannot endure—because justice, goodness, and peace cannot prevail without the grace of God.”
