On Saturday afternoon, May 8, there was a shooting in Times Square that injured three people, including a young girl, out with her parents shopping to buy toys, according to the New York Post.

A man began arguing with three people, and then he produced a gun and began wildly shooting into the crowd. Three innocent people were injured from stray bullets during the clash. It happened at 4:55 pm, outside 1515 Broadway, along West 44th Street.

CNN quoted New York Police Department Commissioner Dermot Shea as saying, preliminary investigation revealed that the three victims were strangers and innocent bystanders.

Police said that in the shooting, the 23-year-old first female victim was hit by a bullet in her right thigh, a shot hit the 43-year-old second female victim in her left leg, and a bullet also hit the four-year-old girl in her left leg.

The New York Post’s sources said the child was identified as Skye Martinez of Brooklyn. She was with her parents in Times Square to buy toys, said Shea.

The first victim, Wendy Magrinat from Rhode Island, was in the city to see the Statue of Liberty but missed her ride and went to Times Square instead. And the second victim is Marcela Aldana from New Jersey.

According to NBC, Magrinat was hit while waiting in line in front of the BT21 store with her husband and their two-year-old child.

“I started screaming, asking for help, it was really scary,” Magrinat told the local station.

“Thank God it didn’t break my bone, but it did go inside. The doctor said he wouldn’t do any surgery or take out the bullet, it would do more damage.”

Police were promptly dispatched to the scene and provided assistance. The patients were taken to Bellevue Hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

The gunman may have fled on public transportation and was caught on surveillance footage, which police posted.

A thin black man wearing black trousers, a black long-sleeved shirt, white shoes, and a hat, is seen in a grainy picture released by officials.

According to sources, police named the unidentified gunman as a local street hustler who was probably peddling rap CDs or selling drugs.

The shooting occurs as the city prepares to celebrate its grand re-opening after being closed due to the pandemic.
