Three children, all under the age of 5, were found dead after a house fire in Long Neck, on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 7, according to Delaware State Police.

The fire occurred around 2:30 p.m on the 34600 block of Scarp Street in Long Neck, which is near Millsboro, according to the Sussex County fire department.

A neighbor, Renee Smith, said a babysitter was watching four children in the house, and got out with one.

She said that 30 to 40 people searched the area for three children, who were eventually found dead inside the house after the fire was extinguished.

“It’s sad. It’s just tragic,” Smith said.

The fourth child, also under the age of 5, was transported to a nearby hospital for a medical examination, according to Sgt. Richard Bratz.

Bratz said the children who died will be handed over the state Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the official cause of death. The Fire Marshal’s office will investigate the cause of the fire.

“Our hearts and thoughts and prayers go out to this family,” Bratz said.
