A recent Pew Research survey found that a growing number of Americans think that both technology companies and the media have a negative impact on the country.
The survey published on July 29 found that since 2015 the number of Americans who think that technology companies have a negative effect on the way things are going in the country has doubled.
In 2015, 71% of respondents believed that these companies had a positive effect, now that percentage has been reduced to 50%.
From the other perspective, today 33% of citizens believe that technology has a negative effect, compared to 17% four years ago.
And this trend, shared almost equally by Republicans and Democrats, is confirmed by other recent polls.
In 2018 another survey found that the majority of Americans (55%) think technology companies have too much power and influence, while 72% said social media platforms were likely to intentionally censor political viewpoints they find objectionable.
A survey conducted earlier this year found that the general public believes that social networking companies have a responsibility to remove offensive content from their platforms, although they have little confidence in companies when it comes to determining what is offensive.
Americans also have a very negative view of the effect of the media on society, 64% think they have a bad effect, and only 25% think they have a positive influence.
Since President Donald Trump won the presidential election against all odds in 2016, both media and social networking platforms are receiving a lot of criticism and are accused of censoring and disseminating manipulated or false information.
In fact, CNN, one of the media most critical of Trump and the Republican Party, had a second quarter of audience drop of up to 40%, its lowest since 2015.
This week, Kevin Cernekee, a former Google employee, revealed on a Fox News TV show how the technology giant’s leaders had vowed in 2016 not to allow Trump to win the election again.
“Google executives went up on stage right away [after President Trump won the 2016 elections] and cried; literal tears streaming down their faces following Trump’s victory. They vowed that it would never happen again and they want to use all the power and all the resources that they have to control the flow of information to the public and make sure that Trump loses in 2020,” said the former Google worker.
Google has also been accused of collaborating with the army of the Chinese communist regime.
Peter Thiel, founder of PayPal, said during the National Conservative Conference in Washington that Google would have to explain why it is committed to working with the army of the Chinese communist regime and not with the United States.
President Trump addressed this issue at the recent social media Summit at the White House.
“I’m directing my administration to explore all regulatory and legislative solutions to protect free speech and the free-speech rights of all Americans,” President Trump said, according to The Western Journal.
“We hope to see transparency, more accountability, and more freedom. That’s on both sides,” he continued.
“Big tech must not censor the voices of the American people,” he added.
