The Democrats, motivated by their radical left wing, intend to treat alleged “climate change” as a threat to national security by seeking to make the Pentagon available to combat it. According to experts and Republican officials, these initiatives are putting the historic U.S. military apparatus and its defense strategies at risk in the face of real security threats.
Progressive lawmakers have already announced, even officially, their desire to reduce budgeted National Defense spending by 2021. And on several occasions, they have spoken of reducing defense spending in order to redirect those funds in the fight against “climate change.”
Democratic representative-elect Cori Bush said she hopes to defund the Pentagon during her term in office. Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Ed Markey (D-Mass.) have promoted a similar resolution to cut defense budgets with the support of Greenpeace.
“If you’re having a bad day, just think of all the social services we’re going to fund after we defund the Pentagon,” tweeted Cori Bush in October.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-N.Y.), reiterated Bush’s call for the withdrawal of Defense Department funds. She was also supported by Markey, who introduced a bill to immediately reduce the Pentagon’s budget by at least 10%.

The same group of legislators who are fighting for Pentagon budget cuts are the ones who have repeatedly supported a progressive national agenda that includes the Green New Deal and Medicare for All. As The Washington Free Beacon reported at the time.
Joe Biden himself has repeatedly spoken out in support of the Green New Deal, and has included it as one of his key campaign proposals. While he never explained where he would get the funds to carry out his plans for it, his legislators have done so through various proposals.
Thomas Spoehr, director of the Heritage Foundation’s National Defense Center, warned about the situation, “If we’re not careful, we push ourselves into positions where we sub-optimize defense in favor of climate change. I think it just dilutes what the Department of Defense is really trying to get after.”
Michèle Flournoy, former President Barack Obama’s No. 2 at the Pentagon from 2009 to 2012, spoke repeatedly about her intention to “green” the Defense Department through initiatives such as creating a new office for energy innovation, which would focus on research and development of green technologies and fighting climate change with a national security focus.
Spoehr warned that with fear, excessive environmental policies could allow U.S. adversaries, such as the Chinese Communist Party, to gain advantages in its defense development, if it does not have the same international environmental regulations and/or requirements.
We find experts like Patrick Moore, co-founder and former president of Greenpeace, who claim that “climate change” is an invention of politicians and elites to control the population on the basis of “fear and guilt” but that it has no scientific basis.
“Fear has been used throughout history to control people’s minds and wallets and everything else, and the climate catastrophe is strictly a campaign of fear. Well, fear and guilt. You’re afraid you’re killing your children because you’re driving. Pick them up in your vehicle and emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and you’ll feel guilty about it,” explained Moore.
A paradoxical fact is that in countries where there is greater market freedom, the environment is generally cleaner, as you can see in the chart below.
Politicians on the left are pushing a radical Green New Deal, arguing that it is necessary to save the environment. However, many scientists said that it will not save the environment, but will undoubtedly seriously damage the U.S. economy.
