U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo condemned the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for the four-year prison sentence recently imposed on a journalist who reported the truth about what was happening in China during the first months of the CCP Virus outbreak. At the same time, the CCP was lying and withholding information from the entire world.
Pompeo, in a press release, condemned the Chinese Communist Party for the recent conviction of journalist Zhang Zhan, who tried to communicate the atrocities the regime was committing during the first months of the pandemic and the mishandling of the situation that led to tens of thousands of deaths while trying to hide from the world what was happening.
“The United States strongly condemns the People’s Republic of China’s (PRC) sham prosecution and conviction of citizen journalist Zhang Zhan on December 28.” The press release says, adding: ”The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has shown once again it will do whatever it takes to silence those who question the Party’s official line, even regarding crucial public health information.”
The CCP sentenced journalist Zhang Zhan to four years in prison for informing the world about the Chinese authorities’ mishandling of the CCP virus, detailing overcrowded hospitals and conditions in Wuhan earlier this year.
Zhang was convicted of “generating fights and causing trouble,” an accusation typically used by the CCP to hide illegal imprisonment associated with the absence of freedom of expression or ideological and religious persecution.
Zhang, 37, as reported by Fox News, represented one of the few public cases for such a cause in China. However, reports abound of large numbers of illegal arrests of doctors, nurses, and journalists who tried to tell the world about the atrocities committed by the CCP during the pandemic in China.
Pompeo highlighted the common feature of the CCP with any other authoritarian regime: the lie. “Lying is a characteristic, not a mistake, of authoritarian regimes,” said the Secretary of State.
“The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has shown once again it will do whatever it takes to silence those who question the Party’s official line, even regarding crucial public health information.”
As is well known, the Trump administration blamed the CCP from the beginning of the pandemic for its negligence in the measures implemented. It was precisely its constant lies and misinformation that made it possible to expand throughout the world.
Thanks to the information provided by courageous journalists like Zhang, doctors, and other witnesses, although limited and late, it was possible to have some idea of what was really happening in China and how the world should prepare itself.
Pompeo said the world had “depended heavily” on information provided by Zhang and other citizen journalists after the CCP restricted and manipulated information about the coronavirus at the beginning of the outbreak. “Their hasty trial, which was denied access to foreign observers, shows how fearful the CCP is of Chinese citizens who tell the truth,” the statement said.
