Alelia Murphy is celebrating her 114th birthday in Harlem, NYC, NY July 6, 2019.

She is believed to be the oldest living American.

An Ohio woman, Lessie Brown, held the title before her, but she passed away in January.

According to NBC New York, Murphy was born in North Carolina in 1905. Her age has been confirmed by Gerontology Research Group in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

Her nurse told the Manhattan Times-News that her secret to longevity was an active lifestyle.

Described by her daughter as a “gift from God,” Murphy raised two children by herself after her husband passed away, and the family has been living in Harlem for decades.

While Murphy is the oldest person in the U.S., Kane Tanaka, 116, who lives in Japan, is the oldest person in the world.
