The president, at his press conference on Friday, Aug. 14, commented on the news that former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith would plead guilty to having lied in the investigation that ended in the impeachment of President Trump.
Trump said, “ Kevin Clinesmith a corrupt FBI attorney, who falsified FISA warrants, in James Comey’s very corrupt FBI, is expected to plead guilty, you probably heard that, it just came out.”
FISA warrants, Foreign intelligence surveillance act, are used to investigate individuals suspected of spying for a foreign power. Clinesmith faked a document in order to apply for a FISA warrant in 2017 to investigate Trump’s former adviser, Carter Page, as part of a Democratic-Party-funded disinformation campaign accusing President Trump of plotting with Russia to win the 2016 election.
According to the Justice Department prosecution document, Clinesmith served as assistant general counsel in the FBI’s National Security and Cyber Law Branch from 2015 to 2019, and one of his responsibilities during the Crossfire Hurricane investigation was to prepare applications for FISA warrants, as well as serve as a liaison between the FBI and other federal government agencies.
The Justice Department is seeking to prosecute Clinesmith for an email, which he altered by claiming that Carter Page “was not a source” for another government agency when Page said he was a CIA source.
The news is the first concrete development in the investigation of United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut John Durham, who was chosen in April 2019 by U.S. Attorney General William Barr to investigate the origins of the Russian investigation.
On another occasion President Trump expressed his hope that Durham is “not going to be politically correct and just get a couple of the lower guys.”
“They spied on my campaign, which is treason. They spied, both before and after I won, using the intelligence apparatus of the United States to take down a president, a legally elected president, a duly elected president of the United States. It is the single biggest political crime in the history of our country” the president told Fox News.
