A Texas resident grabbed a shotgun, shot and killed three men who broke into his home, the sheriff’s office said.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, one of the two residents of a trailer home in Channelview heard a “commotion” outside early Monday morning, Dec. 23. He then saw multiple men in dark clothing—possibly one armed—attempted to break into the home, the sheriff said at a news conference.

That resident ran to hide inside the home, while his roommate, armed with a shotgun, exchanged gunfire with the suspects.

The armed resident shot 3 suspected home invaders. They were all pronounced dead at the scene.

All of the suspects killed appeared to be in their early twenties, Gonzalez said. Their identities have not been released yet.

Gonzalez said other suspects may have also been involved in the crime before fleeing the scene.

During the exchange of gunfire, one of the residents was hit once and was treated at a hospital. The second resident was not hurt, according to the sheriff.

The case will most likely be referred to the grand jury, Gonzalez said.

“A person does have the right to defend themselves if that’s what the facts are,” he said. “We’ll have to confirm that. Everything is preliminary.”

Deputies said it is not clear why the suspects targeted this home.

“If it turns out that that’s what they were doing—breaking into someone’s home—regardless of the circumstances, crime doesn’t pay,” said Gonzalez. “Eventually you’re going to end up dead or end up in jail, most likely.”
