A Texas man who drowned his girlfriend’s 3-year-old nephew in a pond years earlier will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Bobby Woods Jr., 21, was convicted Friday, Aug. 16, of capital murder in the death of little Mason Cuttler, who he left to die in a pond near the family’s Lufkin home in August 2015. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole, police said on Monday, Aug. 19.
Woods, who was 17 at the time, thought his girlfriend, Billie Jean Cuttler, 23, was pregnant, leading him to kill Mason to create more room in their home because it already housed three families.
Mason’s body was found Aug. 18, 2015, a day after he was reported missing. According to the criminal complaint, Woods confessed that he pushed Mason into a pond and turned his back on the little boy. He ignored Mason’s cries for help as the child drowned.
Police said girlfriend Billie Jean Cuttler reportedly wanted her nephew dead. A lawyer later revealed Billie Jean Cuttler was never pregnant.
Cuttler pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder in exchange for a 20-year term.
