Texas Department of Public Safety has confirmed that Trooper Moises Sanchez returned to the operating room and is in critical condition after being readmitted for surgery Thursday night, Aug. 22.

Sanchez, 48, was shot once in the head and once in the shoulder in April while attempting to apprehend a suspect in Hidalgo County, Texas, after the trooper responded to a car crash on North 10th Street and Freddy Gonzalez in McAllen. The suspect, 24-year-old Victor Alejandro Godinez, remains jailed in Hidalgo County on charges of attempted capital murder, according to The Monitor.

Sanchez underwent surgery for the gunshot wound to his head he received the night of April 6 and was brought back into surgery late Thursday night, according to KURV.

Yvonne Sanchez, Sanchez’s wife, confirmed through DPS that a surgical repair on Thursday afternoon would be his final surgery, according to CBS 4 News. She said according to his doctors Sanchez left the surgery better than expected.

Sanchez’s family has requested prayers from the community.
