Gary O’Connor—Chairman of Lamar County Democratic Party in Texas—resigned on Tuesday after receiving criticism for calling Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) an “oreo.”
“I am deeply and sincerely sorry for my inappropriate and hurtful use of racist term I used to describe Sen. Tim Scott on my personal Facebook page,” O’Connor said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “It was insensitive, and I have embarrassed myself and my party by its use.”
“As a result, I feel compelled to offer my resignation as chair of the Lamar County Democratic Party for consideration by the County Executive Committee,” he added.
Following President Joe Biden’s joint address to Congress last Wednesday with usual rhetoric affirming the serious threat of systemic racism in America, Scott— the only black senator in the GOP— had a short rebuttal speech.
“Hear me clearly: America is not a racist country,” Scott claimed in his speech last Wednesday, defending Georgia’s election integrity law, which liberals have criticized for disenfranchising black voters.
“I’m an African American who has voted in the South all my life,” Scott said. “I take voting rights personally. Republicans support making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”
Responding to Scott’s speech, O’Connor has gone to social media and posted comments with racially derogatory expressions to describe the South Carolina senator, Daily Caller reported.
“I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles,” O’Connor wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post.
O’Connor immediately faced backlash from fellow Texas colleagues, including Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX), who called the comments “disgusting, hateful, and completely unacceptable” and demanded his resignation.
This is disgusting, hateful, and completely unacceptable.

According to Fox News, Allen West, chairman of the Texas Republican Party, declared that until O’Connor resigns, he would be sending him a “gift” of Oreo cookies.

Besides O’Connor, Scott’s rebuttal to Joe Biden’s speech also has faced a barrage of racist assaults from progressives.
Progressives dubbed Scott “Uncle Tim,” a play on the racial slur “Uncle Tom,” and the term quickly became a trending subject on Twitter.
Congressional Democrats, whose agenda vehemently condemns racism, have been deafeningly silent on the racist slur directed at Scott that trended within their voting base.
Scott reacted to the attack the next day on Fox & Friends, referring to it as the “intolerance [that] so often comes from the left.”
