Authorities said actor Ron Ely’s wife of “Tarzan” was stabbed to death by their son in the home in Southern California, who was subsequently shot to death by police.
Wednesday’s statement from a Santa Barbara County sheriff said deputies found 62-year-old Valerie Lundeen Ely dead on Tuesday night, Oct. 15, with multiple stab wounds inside the home.
The statement says the deputy named the suspect as the son of the couple, Cameron Ely, 30 years old, who was discovered after a search outside.
Authorities said four deputies fired at Cameron Ely after an unspecified threat and he was killed.
There was no statement about the injury of the 81-year-old Ron Ely. An earlier statement from the sheriff said Ely was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
From 1966 to 1968, Ron Ely starred in a “Tarzan” TV series on NBC.
The tall, musclebound Ely was not as well-known as Johnny Weissmuller, the Olympic swimmer who played the role in movies in the 1930s and ’40s but formed the image of the shirtless, loincloth-wearing character remembered by many in the baby-boom generation. Tarzan was a character of fantasy raised in the African jungle.
In the 1975 action film “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze,” Ely also played the title character, but otherwise mostly had small roles in television and movies including the 1958 music film “South Pacific.”
