In a letter, last week, a National Park Service (NPS) regional director said that with an event on this scale, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to comply with social distancing guidelines if they continue to be in effect in early July.

Although the NPS has rejected the idea of a fireworks display at Mount Rushmore to commemorate Independence Day this July, a spokesperson for South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem has stated that the governor would try and ensure that a show is held at the iconic memorial.

In the letter, Herbert Frost, an NPS regional director, raised questions about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus or coronavirus.

Frost’s letter said, “As the nation continues to respond to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, planning an event of this size and magnitude that draws people from across the country raises grave concerns about the ability to adhere to Center for Disease Control guidance which currently recommends that large gatherings be avoided. Particularly those in which physical, social distancing cannot be maintained between people who live in different households,” Frost told South Dakota Tourism Secretary Jim Hagen in the letter according to The Hill.

The letter mentioned that if social distancing procedures are in effect in early July, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to comply with them with an event of this magnitude. Furthermore, as we saw last year, most participants were not wearing face coverings, which are now necessary for all national parks where physical separation is not possible.”

On July 3, 2020, Former President Donald Trump also attended the 2020 fireworks show at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.

Frost also mentioned some tribal resistance to fireworks at Mount Rushmore in his message.

“In addition, the park’s many tribal partners expressly oppose fireworks at the Memorial,” Frost said. “These factors, compiled with the COVID-19 pandemic, do not allow a safe and responsible fireworks display to be held at this site.”

Gov. Noem’s communications director, Ian Fury, has stated that Noem will do everything in her power to ensure that we can celebrate America’s birthday at Mount Rushmore with fireworks.
