A social media feud between two rival rappers escalated into a shooting that left a 9-year-old girl dead days before school started, according to police.
Brandoniya Bennett was struck by a bullet in the head on Wednesday, Aug. 14, as she sat on a couch at her Old East Dallas apartment, KTVT reported.
The suspect, 19-year-old Tyrese Simmons, turned himself in at the Dallas County Jail on Thursday, Aug. 15, and faces a capital murder charge, Dallas Police said in a statement.
According to officials, Simmons allegedly went to the apartment complex to confront a rival after they exchanged disparaging comments about one another on social media. Police said the other person did not come out of his apartment, so Simmons circled around to the back.
Then Simmons opened fire, shooting at the wrong apartment and fatally wounding Brandoniya, according to police.
Witnesses and responding officers made a desperate attempt to get Brandoniya to a hospital quickly but she died soon after.
“As adults, as parents as police officers, we’re supposed to make them safe, as community leaders, we’re supposed to make them safe,” said Dallas Police Department Maj. Danny Williams, according to KTVT. “She was sitting in her house, she felt safe … she was only 9 years old.”
Bail for Simmons was set at $500,000.
