A veteran U.S. Secret Service agent who served on the Presidential Protective Detail died Saturday after her kayak overturned off the coast of Annapolis, the agency said Monday.

The agency announced that Stephanie Hancock, 39, who most recently served on the Presidential Protective Detail, died in the accident.

“On Saturday, June 29, 2019, the Secret Service lost one of our own in a tragic kayaking accident in Maryland. Special Agent Stephanie Hancock had been with the U.S. Secret Service since 2007, last serving on the Presidential Protective Detail,” the Secret Service said in a statement. “Our condolences, as well as our thoughts and prayers, are with the family of Special Agent Hancock.”

The body of Hancock was recovered at around 9:45 p.m. Saturday night, approximately 6 hours after she was last seen.

Hancock fell into the water at the mouth of Spa Creek around 3:20 p.m., WJZ reports.

Officials do not believe Hancock nor her boyfriend who accompanied her on the kayaking trip were wearing life jackets at the time of the accident, according to Fox 5 DC.

According to the station, the companion was rescued alive from the water.
