According to a report, the intensive publicity of the Gabby Petito case led to the recovery of another body in the same forest where the Long Island native’s body was found.
The Teton County Sheriff’s Office reported that Robert Lowery, 46, was last seen on Aug. 20 in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, where Petito’s body was discovered on Sept. 19.
The remains of Lowery, a father of two from Houston, were found near the Black Canyon Trail at the base of Teton Pass on Tuesday, Sept. 28.
“The widespread news coverage of the Gabby Petito search helped bring light to Lowery’s case, and resulted in at least two members of the public calling local authorities this past weekend, with new information about his possible last seen point,” Teton County Search and Rescue stated, according to the Daily Beast.
Sheriff’s Deputy Chad Sachse stated that Lowery went missing 40 miles from where Petito’s body was discovered.
The two cases are not believed to be linked, said authorities.
The missing man’s family has been notified of the finding of a body that matches his description and is awaiting the results of the coroner’s investigation.
Lowery’s family said, according to the New York Post, “The Teton County Sheriff’s Office informed our family this afternoon that the Search and Rescue Team located a body that fits the description of our son, Robert’ Bob’ Lowery near Black Canyon Trail. We await the Teton County, WY coroner’s report.”
Cian McLaughlin, 27, was another confirmed missing case four days after being seen walking in Grand Teton National Park without a backpack on June 8.
After a thorough search that included search helicopters and thermal imaging cameras, no trace of McLaughlin was found.
22-year-old Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11, after going on a field trip with her 23-year-old boyfriend, Brian Laundrie.
Her family last heard from her at the end of August, roughly two weeks after Moab, Utah, police responded to a probable domestic violence incident involving the pair. According to police paperwork, no charges were laid, but the two were separated overnight.
Laundrie returned home to Florida without his partner earlier this month with her van. He hired a lawyer and had refused to help detectives find Petito.
Laundrie has been listed as a person of interest connected to her disappearance. Officials are searching for him.
