San Francisco’s Democratic Mayor London Breed is backtracking and calling for increased police presence in the midst of a deepening crime crisis, after supporting the leftist “police defunding” movement and cutting millions of dollars from law enforcement budgets during 2020.
As happened in many other Democrat-led cities across the United States, crime in San Francisco soared over the past year after its leaders followed through on far-left calls to slash the police department’s budget.
Following the death of George Floyd, well-funded left-wing groups such as Black Lives Matter and Antifa went on a nationwide rampage calling for widespread defunding of law enforcement. Among the politicians who joined in and acted on the demands was London Breed.
Breed announced on Thursday, Feb. 25, a plan for how the city will invest $120 million over the next two years in black communities, which would be drawn directly from the law enforcement budget.
“The Dream Keeper Initiative,” as it is called, will increase investments in workforce development, health campaigns, youth programs, cultural and housing support.
Notably, the black population represents only about 5% of San Francisco’s population, a proportion that has steadily declined over the past 50 years.
But surprisingly now, less than a year after her announcement, Breed launched an emergency police intervention due to San Francisco’s high crime rate of rampant drug use and gun violence, reported NY Post.
During a speech where she sought to justify her change of course using with an ’emotional’ tone, Breed said:
“I’m proud this city believes in giving people second chances. Nevertheless, we also need there to be accountability when someone does break the law…Our compassion cannot be mistaken for weakness or indifference. I was raised by my grandmother to believe in ‘tough love,’ in keeping your house in order, and we need that, now more than ever.”
The skyrocketing crime rate in the city is undoubtedly the main reason Breed made a radical shift in her stance from the one he’s held for the past year.
A report released this week by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) in San Francisco concluded that homicides increased in Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego and San Francisco by 17 percent in 2021. Private property crimes, such as auto theft, looting of major stores, home burglaries, and street robberies, also increased.
Breed said: “It is time for the reign of criminals to end. And it comes to an end when are we more aggressive with law enforcement and less tolerant of all the bulls–t that has destroyed our city.”
The policies Breed announced include securing emergency police funds so that they have the necessary resources, modifying the city’s policing ordinance so that police can address emergency situations in a timely manner, and disrupting the illegal peddling of stolen goods.
It is not easy to trust the mayor’s new discourse considering that just a few months ago she was promulgating the opposite. On the other hand, the leftists, who formed her power support in the past, will now surely turn against her, generating a scenario of maximum uncertainty.
