Florida Governor Ron DeSantis again spoke out in favor of individual freedoms. On Wednesday, he said he would pardon all people who have been penalized for defying restrictions imposed by county officials to contain the CCP Virus (Chinese Communist Party virus), reports the New York Post.

He broke the news live on a Fox News broadcast while Mike and Jillian Carnevale, a gym-owning couple who were facing jail time for failing to comply with draconian safety recommendations imposed by officials in their county, were on the air at the time.

These “safety recommendations” include primarily the wearing of face masks and social distancing.

“It’s a total overreach,” he told host Laura Ingraham. “These things with health should be advisory, they should not be punitive,” he added.

The Carnevale’s, who were facing up to 120 days in jail for repeatedly allowing people to forgo masks at their gym in Plantation (Broward County) could not hide their happiness when Governor DeSantis announced his pardon.

“I’m glad you have Mike and Jillian on, and I’m also glad to be on to be able to say that effective tomorrow morning, I’m going to sign a reprieve under my constitutional authority,” the republican governor said.

“So that will delay the case for 60 days against both of them, and then when our clemency board meets in the coming weeks, we’ll issue pardons not only for Mike and Jillian, but for any Floridian that may have outstanding infractions for things like masks and social distancing,” he promised.

DeSantis said the potential jail time was particularly absurd in the case of the couple who owned the gym.

“The fact is, it’s not even right to be wearing masks when you’re exercising,” the governor said.

“The World Health Organization advises against it! It’s not healthy to be doing that in the first place, so it was a bad restriction,” he added.

“I think they’ve been treated poorly, but fortunately they’ve got a governor that cares,” he said.

Return to Freedom

Earlier this month, DeSantis signed an executive order that absolutely eliminates all local restrictions on combating the statewide pandemic caused by the CCP Virus, making him one of the few governors to make this decision. The order also suspends all local emergency legislation effective July 1.

In addition, DeSantis banned “vaccine passports” in the ‘sunshine state,’ arguing that it is unnecessary to “monitor people at this time.”
DeSantis has repeatedly come out as a major opponent of restrictions on freedom and so-called vaccine passports, arguing that they would only serve to create two classes of citizens: the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, thus fueling discrimination.

“You have the right to participate in society, go to a restaurant, go to a movie, go to a ball game, all these things without having to divulge this kind of information,” DeSantis said at a press conference.

Florida was one of the first U.S. states to allow businesses to reopen after the initial waves of the disease last year, and since that time Governor DeSantis has criticized other states for keeping COVID restrictions in place, which have been proven not to lower the contagion curve and only lead to economic recession and depression.
