The probe led by GOP members into the Wuhan lab is suspecting that Wuhan experts may have genetically modified the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic, backing the lab-leak theory.

Republicans on the Foreign Affairs Committee alleged that they detected highly suspicious behavior with the Chinese government and the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) before the official announcement of the first victims of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that caused the COVID-19 pandemic) was made in December 2019, Fox News reported.

September 12, 2019, two months before the public came to learn of the existence of the virus, the Wuhan University was found to have inquired about laboratory inspections.

Not long after the move, the online WIV’s viral sequence database was eradicated, the outlet said.

And during the evening of the same day, the facility employed security services  “to include gatekeepers, guards, video surveillance, security patrols, and people to handle the ‘registration and reception of foreign personnel,’” the GOP report continued.

In late 2019, an expert in biology and chemical weapon defenses, Major General Chen Wei was assigned to manage the Wuhan Institute’s biosafety level-4 lab. The move which the Republicans said suggested the Chinese Communist government was worried that something was amiss at the Wuhan lab.

“If she took control in 2019, it would mean the CCP knew about the virus earlier, and that the outbreak began earlier,” the report said.

From reviewing satellite images between September and October 2019, the research team noticed hospital visits and internet searches for COVID-19 symptoms were dramatically frequent.

Further mapping data indicates that researchers at the facility most likely commuted to work via the Wuhan shuttle bus and the city metro. If they were infected with the virus, their transport history likely hints they were those that spread it to the entire area.

The October 2019 Military World Games held in Wuhan was as well peculiar, the Republicans noted, for international media back at the time complained the event was vacant of spectators, and the city was comparable to a “ghost town.”

International athletes who joined the sports games also reported symptoms of COVID-19 disease, with four nations that later in November and December of 2019 confirmed the presence of the new novel virus.

The study additionally found clues that proved SARS-CoV-2 was indeed an engineered product, citing from a coronavirus expert Dr. Ralph Baric of the University of North Carolina, which collaborated with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

In an interview with an Italian publication, Dr. Baric claimed scientists could genetically manipulate a virus into a new one “without leaving any trace.” Similar claims of such technology had also been made in 2017 by a doctoral student working at the WIV, the GOP report said.

The congressional report conveyed that the Chinese Communist Party had tried to cover news about the virus.

They recalled the February 2020 Health Times interview with Yu Chuanhua, the Vice President of the Hubei Health Statistics and Information Society, who disclosed a number of COVID-19 patients he learned of before December 2019.

But before the interview was published, Chuanhua tried to “retract the information regarding the two sick patients in November,” a move the research team alleged was “to comply with the China CDC gag order that was issued two days prior.”

The GOP report came out weeks ahead of the September deadline issued by President Joe Biden that required the intelligence community to determine the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed over 4.2 million people worldwide, infected approximately 200 million, and thrown global stability into disarray.
