Authorities are investigating exactly how a well-known legal personality was shot on Sept. 4. The gun attack came just months after two immediate family members were mysteriously shot dead at their huge estate.

South Carolina Law Enforcement (SLED) confirmed Alex Murdaugh was shot in the head after his vehicle broke down in Hampton County.

Lawyer Jim Griffin revealed his 53 year-old client exited his vehicle to replace a flat tire on Old Salkehatchie Road. While he was busy working on the car, a passing vehicle looped around and its occupants opened fire.

Murdaugh was transported by air to the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital, where he was urgently treated for at least one gunshot wound. SLED officers had not identified any suspects at the time of publication.

The attack raised suspicion about the unsolved double murder of Murdaugh’s wife, Maggie, and son Paul at their “Moselle” hunting lodge near Hampton, on June 7. The 52 year-old mother and 22 year-old son were shot dead near the family’s hunting lodge dog kennels.

“The Murdaugh family has suffered through more than any one family could ever imagine,” a family representative said according to the New York Post. “We expect Alex to recover and ask for your privacy while he recovers.”

Murdaugh told authorities he was not at home when the murders occurred, and no suspects have been identified according to the Daily Beast.

A $100,000 reward was offered for any evidence that leads to an arrest.

The son was previously charged with killing teenager Mallory Beach on a boat back in 2019. The accused faced three felonies for reportedly driving a boat into a bridge piling at Parris Island while inebriated, according to authorities. After Paul pleaded not guilty, Beach’s mother sued the Murdaugh family for wrongful death.

Paul had complained about receiving multiple death threats for Beach’s fatality before passing away according to surviving relatives.

For more than a century, family patriarchs exercised significant legal power across the Palmetto State. Different Murdaugh family members served as prosecutors for five Lowcountry counties. Several generations worked as solicitors for the 14th Judicial Circuit. The family also ran litigation firm Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth & Detrick.
