While sharing some thoughts on the importance of having the American people on board with any strategy, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) expressed on Tuesday, June 18, concern, confusion, and dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s policies especially the plan for Iran and how he advises the president to explain his plans to the American people.
Schumer said, “I’m concerned. I don’t, I don’t know what their strategy is and it doesn’t seem consistent. It seems when the president wakes up one morning he says something and then two days later he says something else. One day he says he’s going to obliterate them and the next day he says he wants to talk to them. The president instead of tonight talking about all this immigration stuff, which he’s going to, he ought to tell the people at his rally what he wants to do in Iran.”
And then he said, “The policy in Iran has been erratic and opaque. Nobody knows what their plans are and why they’re doing what. And as we have learned over, since the 60s, unless the American people are on board with a strategy, it ultimately is not going to get their support and Congress’s support. So we need the president and I told this to Mr. Pompeo, to Secretary of State Pompeo, on the phone Saturday, we need the president to lay out what he thinks the problem is and there is a problem, how he wants to deal with it, and what are his limits in dealing with it before action.”
While Iran says it’s breaking compliance with the international agreement that keeps it from making nuclear weapons, the president ordered 1,000 more troops to the Middle East and then took Schumer’s advice at his campaign rally last night by providing some policy clarification on Iran, the Middle East, and other corrupt regimes.
President Trump said, “We have repaired America’s friendship with our cherished ally the state of Israel. And as I heard (Vice President) Mike (Pence) saying before, we recognized the true capital of Israel and opened the American Embassy in Jerusalem. And we recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. And I withdrew the United States from the disastrous. Just a disaster. A disaster. The disastrous Iran nuclear deal. And imposed the toughest ever sanctions on the world’s number one state sponsor of terrorism. We’re charting a path to stability and peace in the Middle East, because great nations do not want to fight endless wars. They’ve been going on forever. Starting to remove a lot of troops. We’re finally putting America first. In Latin America, our country once again stands against corrupt communist and socialist regimes. And we support the people of Cuba and Venezuela in their righteous struggle for freedom. Thank you. Marco (Rubio). Thank you Rick (Scott). Thank you Lindsey (Graham). We will make America strong again. We will make America safe again!”
