President Donald Trump during the White House press conference on Tuesday, March 24, said both parties of Congress “must unite to ensure America is truly an independent nation” in the face of the raging CCP Virus (Wuhan coronavirus) pandemic that in a span of two month has plagued almost every country around the world.
“We should never be reliant on a foreign country for the means of our own survival. I think we’ve learned a lot. This crisis has underscored just how critical it is to have strong borders and a robust manufacturing sector,” President Trump said.
“For three years, we’ve embarked on a great national project to secure our immigration system and bring back our manufacturing jobs. We’ve brought back many jobs, a record numbers of jobs, and this really shows, this experience shows how important borders are. Without borders, you don’t have a nation,” he continued.
Though the United States plays a leading role in research globally, much of the manufacturing of lifesaving drugs has moved overseas. The United States currently depends on China to manufacture an estimated 97% of all antibiotics and 80% of the active pharmaceutical ingredients needed to produce drugs in the United States.
Beijing maintains a grip on the global supply chain, it recently issued a threat that it could impose pharmaceutical export controls, which would plunge America into “the mighty sea of coronavirus.”
“Our goal for the future must be to have American medicine for American patients, American supplies for American hospitals, and American equipment for our great American heroes,” President Trump said. “America will never be a supplicate nation. We will be a proud, prosperous, and self-reliant nation. We will embrace commerce with all but will be dependent on none. Above all, we know the best thing for our economy and the world right now is a very, very powerful victory over the virus.”
Last week, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) introduced a bill to cut U.S. reliance on Chinese drugs.
“The Chinese Communist Party threatened to cut off America’s access to vital drugs in the midst of a pandemic caused by its own failures,” Cotton said in a statement announcing the bill. “It’s time to pull America’s supply chains for lifesaving medicine out of China and make the CCP pay for contributing to this global emergency.”

In addition to Cotton and Gallagher, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) introduced a similar bill alongside Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.). And Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) introduced his own version.
“The coronavirus will show the American people the wisdom of Trump’s policies. The need for strong borders? The terrible threat of China? The dangers of globalism? The weakness of supply chains?” Newsmax White House correspondent Emerald Robinson wrote in a tweet. “You are watching President Trump’s entire worldview being validated in real time.”
