According to Dayton Beach, FL police, they are searching for a driver who took off after running over and killing a toddler.
Daytona Beach Police Department officials said the baby was struck near Daytona Beach’s North Charles Street. Police said the driver seemed to be backing out of a parking space at an apartment complex, hit the toddler, panicked, and then drove off.
Investigators said in connection with the crash they were looking for Earnest Ponder, 29.
Investigators said the photo of Ponder’s being circulating is about five months old and they think he might have shorter hair now.
Ponder has tattoos on both arms, and is between 5 feet, 5 inches and 5 feet, 11 inches tall. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, grey shorts, and glasses.
Ponder was gone by the time police arrived at North Charles Street, sparking a search that stretched at least a mile and a half away.
Over the course of their search, police have taken someone into custody, but it is uncertain whether that person has any link with the hit-and-run crash.
“Don’t know why he fled from the scene here, I don’t know but right now. The focus is on the family. We’re trying to get them some counseling and help them out. It’s very tragic,” said Craig Capri, Chief of Police at Daytona Beach.
