Police are asking for help from the public after a small dog was killed after being set on fire at West Haven beach.

At about 10 a.m., the police said officers responded on Friday, July 5, 2019, to the Beach Street area near Third Avenue / Second Avenue to report an uncontained fire in the Sandy Point Beach parking lot.

Then crews extinguished the flames before a small dog was found dead at the source of the fire.

An initial investigation suggests the dog has been set on fire and abandoned in that parking lot. An accelerant may have also been used.

The dog was described as potentially a 1-year-old “mini Schnauzer” with cropped ears and a cropped tail.

Police ask anyone who has seen the fire or suspicious activity in the area from July 4, 2019, 10 p.m. and July 5, 2019, at 1 a.m. to contact the Police Department of West Haven (203) 937-3900.
