Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), known by her acronym AOC, on Monday, Oct. 7, called for the abolition of all prisons in the United States and assured that it is necessary to start talking about freeing criminals into society.
AOC said on Twitter: “Mass incarceration is our American reality. It is a system whose logic evolved from the same lineage as Jim Crow, American apartheid, & slavery.”
“That means we need to have a real conversation about decarceration & prison abolition in this country,” she added.
Her tweets caused different reactions in social networks, where many users mocked the idea they considered both crazy and contradictory.
One man took the opportunity to remind the congresswoman that both Jim Crow and the founders of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) were Democrats.
“You want to abolish prisons? Wise idea. We could have the rapists and murderers and thieves and child molesters come live with you,” one man wrote on Twitter.
“Abolition of prisons? What does that even mean? I can’t believe you’re in Congress,” commented another man on the social network.
The radical left movement for “prison abolition” is an initiative to abolish prisons completely, even for violent criminals.
In this sense, the Democratic Socialists of America, of which Ocasio-Cortez is a member, voted in August to create “a national Police & Prison Abolition Working Group,” according to The Daily Caller.
The socialist legislator, known for her radical proposals, said the United States imprisons more than any other country in the world, but offered no statistics on the criminality associated with the deprivations of liberty it proposes to eliminate.
Democratic cities among the 50 most dangerous in the world
In fact, the highest crime rates, not just in the United States, but around the world, are in cities that have been ruled by Democrats for decades, such as Baltimore.
In 2018, Baltimore ranked 23rd on the annual list of the world’s 50 most dangerous cities according to Mexico’s Citizens Council for Public Safety, journalist Dan O’Donnell said.
“Its homicide rate of 50.52 per 100,000 residents topped even that of San Salvador, El Salvador, which has a murder rate of 50.32 per 100,000 people. Meanwhile, the most violent city in Honduras, San Pedro Sula, has a homicide rate of 46.67 per 100,000.”
Three other U.S. cities historically ruled by Democrats that are included in the list of the world’s 50 most dangerous cities are St. Louis, (Missouri), Detroit, and New Orleans.
Nine of the country’s 10 most violent cities have had Democratic governments for decades, O’Donnell explains based on 24/7 Wall Street data.
On these crime statistics and how convicts of violent crimes could be handled, AOC offered no concrete alternative solution to the current prison system beyond simply eliminating it.
