Police in Corsicana, Texas, have charged Juana Marquez, 42, with abandoning or endangering a 4-year-old girl, after the young girl died of injuries sustained from pulling a large pot of boiling water from the stove, CBSDFW reported.

On Saturday, Aug. 10, Corsicana Police Department, Corsicana Fire, and EMS responded to the 400 block of South 34th Street to reports of an unresponsive child, according to the Corsicana Police Department. When officers arrived, they found the body of a girl about 4 years old inside the home.

The police were told that about 12 hours earlier the child had pulled a large pot of boiling water from the stove. Her head, torso, arms, and other areas of her body were covered by boiling water, Corsicana PD said.

The reporting person stated she was not in the room at the time and treated the child herself and did not seek any medical attention.

The Medical Examiner’s preliminary autopsy results indicated that the child died due to injuries sustained from the boiling water. Corsicana PD said.

An arrest warrant was obtained for abandoning or endangering a child, a 2nd-degree felony. Officers served the warrant, and now the suspect is in custody awaiting arraignment.
