A woman who escaped from the North Korean regime criticized the attitude of U.S. athlete Gwen Berry, who turned her back on the national anthem and flag during the awards ceremony of the Olympic hammer event qualifier for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Korean defector Yeonmi Park voiced her thoughts during an appearance on Fox & Friends last Thursday, July 1.
Park said what Berry did is “unthinkable” when comparing the freedom that exists in the U.S. as opposed to what North Koreans have to bear.
She added that if she had done that under the North Korean regime, she would have been executed, and not only her but eight generations of her family could be sent to prison camps and executed.
She also said that real slavery is what she experienced as she was 13 years old in 2007 and was sold from China, and living under the Chinese Communist Party is real slavery.
According to Breitbart News, the athlete, Gwen Berry, turned her back to the U.S. flag while the national anthem was playing after receiving the bronze medal in the Olympic hammer throw in Oregon on Saturday, June 26.
The activist athlete took off the black T-shirt she was wearing with the inscription “Activist Athlete” on it and pulled it over her head.
Berry says she is going to fight the “systemic racism” she says exists in the U.S. and that during the awards ceremony they purposely played the anthem when she was in the middle.
Berry also said she does not feel represented by the anthem; for her, the anthem is racist and does not represent blacks, so she has a total hatred for it because it contains racist lyrics.
On the other hand, the hammer thrower is receiving harsh criticism after her disrespectful attitude towards the U.S. flag.
It seems that there was a radical change in Berry’s way of thinking because 5 years ago, she was seen proudly holding the American flag while training for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.
The picture was captured on Berry’s website but has now disappeared. She was described as a hard-working athlete-in-training with “countless hours of training and determination” that “will sure succeed at her dream of representing her country at the 2016 Summer Olympics.”
One of the people who publicly criticized her during an appearance on Fox News was former NFL player Jack Brewer, who is black like Berry and told her that many things happened before regarding slavery. It was real slavery, and they were able to get through it because they lived in America.
Brewer went further and said that today there is an enormous division in America. The culprits are neither Donald Trump, the patriots, nor the conservatives. The real culprits are the leftists who do not appreciate what the country does for them.
He also said that the athlete should be excluded from the Olympic Games and that athletes should be an example for children and that they should be protected from seeing messages of hate.
