New Hampshire state Rep. Richard Komi (D-Manchester), resigned on Saturday, May 2, after suggesting Tara Reade “was looking for attention” in accusing former Vice President Joe Biden of sexual assault.

“Judged by the position of the female vagina, it will not be easy for anyone to just put their finger into the vagina unless their [sic] is some cooperation from the female herself. That is why I believe Tara Reade’s allegations [sic] is false. She is looking for attention,” Komi said on Friday in a now-deleted tweet.

Komi was immediately hit with backlash with New Hampshire House Speaker Steve Shurtleff (D-Merrimack) calling for him to resign, reported the Hampshire Union-Leader.

“I am appalled by Representative Komi’s comments. They were dismissive and hurtful to survivors of sexual assault across the Granite State and across the country,” Shurtleff said. “The comments are not fitting for the New Hampshire House of Representatives and immediately upon learning of them I called him and asked Representative Komi to resign his seat.”

Komi, a Biden supporter, apologized for making the controversial comment.

“I also want to offer my sincere apologies to anybody whose feelings may have been hurt by the tweets. I am and will continue to be a supporter of victims of sexual and domestic assault,” Komi said in his letter obtained by The Associated Press. “The tweets were very poorly worded and do not reflect who I am and what I stand for. I ask for the forgiveness of all who have been a victim of sexual or any other kind of assault.”

In March, Reade accused Biden of sexually assaulting her when she was an aide in his Senate office in 1993. Biden has vehemently denied Reade’s claim. On Friday, Biden appeared on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” to personally address the allegations for the first time. He also published a statement on Medium in which he claimed that the allegations “aren’t true,” and that it “never happened.”

However, more and more evidence has come to support Reade’s claim. On Saturday, two new sources have come forward claiming that Reade told them about Biden’s alleged sexual misconduct in the 1990s, according to The Associated Press
