A Staten Island domestic violence suspect was killed and a police officer injured in the hand Tuesday morning, Sept. 17, in a wild street shootout, police said.

Emergency crews were called over to a reported domestic dispute.

A woman called 911 around 8:15 a.m. reporting a domestic assault. When police arrived, they took the victim into their vehicle and drove her to safety nearby, called for backup and confronted the man.

The suspect violently resisted arrest. When police used a Taser on him, he allegedly pulled out a gun.

The suspect fired two shots, and officers responded with three rounds, killing the man.

A 44-year-old female officer was shot in the wrist. She was taken to Richmond University Medical Center and is expected to recover, authorities said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. According to authorities, the suspect was 39 with a history of violent crimes and had been convicted of a previous shooting in Staten Island and spent five years in prison.

A 9-mm pistol was discovered at the scene under a parked car.

The shooting is still under investigation. The identities of the officers and the suspect have not yet been released.
