An Arctic wolf that had long served as a wildlife ambassador for a conservation center in suburban New York City has died at the age of 16.

South Salem’s Wolf Conservation Center says Atka died peacefully over the weekend.

The Journal News reports Atka arrived in New York from Minnesota in 2002 when he was just eight days old.

Akta retired from his career as a travelling wildlife ambassador in 2016.

The center says Akta leaves a huge impact on wolf conservation efforts and he will be missed.
