New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently published his book “American Crisis: leadership lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic” in which he shifts the blame for the bad decisions he made during the CCP Virus pandemic that killed thousands of elderly people in the state’s nursing homes, the New York Post reported.

On March 25, along with the state health department, Cuomo ordered that nursing homes could not turn away seniors who were discharged from hospitals with the CCP Virus and also prohibited testing of these patients.

The New York Post and the Republicans strongly criticized the measure, which did not comply with the common sense of protecting the most vulnerable population from the virus, and on May 10 Cuomo decided, although already too late, to go back on it.

Cuomo complained in his book, “ On April 25, conservative columnist Michael Goodwin published a piece in Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post aimed at New York with the headline, ‘State lacked common sense in nursing homes’ coronavirus approach. It was an orchestrated strategy and a Fox News drumbeat.

As a result of the order, infections multiplied and in a population recognized as being at high risk, 6,700 elderly people (officially) died in New York’s nursing homes, although an independent analysis by The Associated Press puts that figure above 10,000 by including patients who died in hospitals and counting the empty beds in nursing homes.

“By early spring, Republicans needed an offense to distract from the narrative of their botched federal response—and they needed it badly,” Cuomo wrote. “So they decided to attack Democratic governors and blame them for nursing homes.”

Because of the sensitivity of the issue, the case became notorious, and in late August, the Justice Department opened an investigation into deaths at nursing homes in four Democratic states: New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Michigan.

“It wasn’t just me,” he continued. “[Gov.] Phil Murphy in New Jersey, Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan, Gavin Newsom in California, and Tom Wolf in Pennsylvania were all in the Republican crosshairs on nursing homes. As the states with the most deaths were Democratic states, the Trump forces saw us as an easy target,” the governor argued in his book.

President Trump’s response didn’t take long to come, and he used his Twitter account again to criticize the governor for not taking responsibility for what happened.

New York state was the hardest hit by the CCP Virus and despite strict quarantine, had more than 30,000 deaths. One third of those deaths were among the elderly who died in nursing homes.
