New York Attorney General Letitia James ordered the Black Lives Matter Foundation on Monday, July 6, to immediately cease and desist soliciting donations from New Yorkers as the organization has come under scrutiny for lack of transparency.
“The foundation, which has no affiliation with the Black Lives Matter Movement, has not registered as a charitable organization in the state of New York, making contributions solicited within the state illegal,” James’s office said in a statement, reported the Daily Wire. “The Black Lives Matter Foundation has faced increased scrutiny in recent weeks for accepting donations meant for the Black Lives Matter Movement to end police brutality.”
“Every organization that seeks to solicit donations from New Yorkers must follow state laws,” James said. “We will also fight for transparency so that donors’ goodwill isn’t preyed upon by opportunists. The Black Lives Matter Foundation failed to register or file any financial documents with the state, and therefore has failed to provide New Yorkers with information on how their donations will be used. That’s why we are taking action by demanding that the foundation stop soliciting contributions from New Yorkers. I encourage all donors to practice due diligence when giving to charities.”
The BLM Global Network said last month that it has received more than $1.1 million individual donations at an average of $33 per donation since George Floyd’s death, according to the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF).
The Daily Caller reported that the national arm of Black Lives Matter spent millions of dollars on travel and compensation over the past three fiscal years, but only 6% of BLM spending went to local chapters and grassroots organizations.
BLM Global Network Managing Director Kailee Scales told the DCNF that the organization is not responsible for preparing the financial statements but a California charity named Thousand Currents has acted as a fiscal sponsor for BLM Global Network since 2016.
“The numbers you cite from the annual information return form [sic] our fiscal sponsor reflect IRS-required reporting categories that bear no relationship to how our programs have actually been run,” Scales said. “These are not numbers developed by BLM Global Network Foundation and we cannot speak to how they were calculated.”
A recently resurfaced video showed Black Lives Matter founder Patrisse Cullors admitting that the leaders of the group are “trained marxists.” She also said the organization’s goal is to remove President Donald Trump from office.
